About Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation

A Treaty 3 Nation guided by respect, resilience and harmony, formerly known as Lac La Croix First Nation

Gakijiwanong: Gakijiwanong is Ojibwe for Where the water flows. In 2023, Lac La Croix First Nation changed its name to Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation. We are Saulteaux people and a signatory to Treaty 3, and Chief Blackstone (Sr.) is recognized as the first chief at Gakijiwanong. We belong to Pwi-di-goo-zing Ne-yaa-zhing Advisory Services and Grand Council Treaty #3.

Population: In 2019–20 our registered population was 537, with 326 members living on reserve. Ojibwe and English are spoken in our community.

Location: We live in the Rainy River District along the Ontario–Minnesota border, on the 6214.1 ha Neguagon Lake Indian Reserve 25D, about 200 km northwest of Thunder Bay. From Highway 11, Flanders Road runs 76 km directly south to Lac La Croix. Quetico Provincial Park lies on our traditional territory.

Culture: Our values of respect, resilience and harmony are guided by our elders' wisdom and our cultural teachings. We hold an annual pow wow, and the Ojibwe horse (Lac La Croix pony) is named after our community, where the horses were last found in the wild. Our community is home to a school from Junior Kindergarten to grade 12, and tourism tied to Quetico Park, including guiding by the Lac La Croix Guides Association, is a key part of our economy.
